Common questions

Why does the audio stop when my screen locks?

If you have Spotify connected, audio currently pauses when the screen locks. This is a known limitation of the Spotify Web Playback engine on iOS and we are working on a fix. Apple Music connections support full background and locked-screen playback.

I get "Spotify Premium required."

The Spotify integration uses Spotify Premium's playback feature. Free, Duo, and mobile-only Spotify tiers can't play in third-party apps. Either upgrade your Spotify plan or connect Apple Music instead.

My library scan didn't finish.

Open the app and tap the scan strip at the top of the home screen to resume from where it left off. If it stalls, go to Settings → Rescan library. Large libraries (10k+ songs) can take 30+ minutes the first time. The scan resumes if you close the app.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Open the Settings app on your iPhone → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions → BPM. Cancel from there. Your Pro features stay active until the end of the billing period. You can also restore a previous purchase from Settings inside BPM.

I bought Lifetime. Why am I seeing a paywall?

Open BPM → Settings → tap "Restore Purchases." If that doesn't work, email support@beatspermile.app with the email tied to your Apple ID.

How accurate is the cadence detection?

BPM uses your iPhone's accelerometer. Holding the phone in hand, in an armband, or in a pocket all work — the algorithm adapts. Running on a treadmill works too. The detection takes ~5-10 seconds to lock onto your stride after you start moving.

Does BPM track my distance or pace?

BPM is not a distance tracker. If you grant location permission, the run summary shows an approximate distance, but our focus is the music. For pace and route, use Strava or your Apple Watch's native workout app alongside BPM.

Why is my favorite song not getting picked?

BPM only plays songs whose tempo is within range of your cadence (with half-time and double-time matches included). If a track is at, say, 95 BPM and you're running at 170 SPM, it'll match (170 = 95 × ~1.79, not a clean half/double). If it's not playing, it's outside the matchable tempo window for that mood.
